The UF Bat House

Near Lake Alice on UF's campus are two of the largest occupied bat houses in the country. Every night at dusk, the bats swarm out of the buildings looking for their latest prey (a.k.a. night-time insects). Basically UF built these structures to house their own free pest control. Quite clever. We have been meaning to visit the bats for some time, so last Monday we finally took a family field trip to campus. We picked up some Jimmy Johns on the way over and enjoyed the sandwiches as we waited for the sun to set. And when it was show time, we walked over for a closer look.

In the background of our picture, you can see the two bat houses.

Logan's view of all the action.

And then our final shot of the night before the camera died. Classic Kristen.
It takes about 15 minutes for all the bats to leave the houses empty, so luckily it was not over in just a few moments. We got several opportunities to talk and show the boys what exactly was going on. Sean actually recorded the bat parade on his phone but I can only imagine they look like tiny fuzzy, black dots zooming across the screen. I will have to take a lot and see if it's worth posting.
